When I first got sober, I thought recovery would be mostly about learning how to live without alcohol. I didn’t realize how much I would also need to learn about being with myself. I had spent a long time looking for ways to escape discomfort. Without that escape, I was left with feelings I didn’t always know how to name, much less sit with.
Yoga didn’t make those feelings disappear. What it gave me was a place to practice staying.
Learning to Stay
On my mat, I began to notice the moments when I wanted to rush, push harder, or check out. I learned to pause and ask myself what I actually needed. Sometimes I needed movement. Sometimes I needed to breathe and let my body settle. Sometimes I needed to rest, even when part of me felt like I should be doing more.
That practice has carried into my recovery. When life feels overwhelming, I can take a breath before I react. I can notice what is happening in my body. I can remind myself that a difficult feeling is something I can move through, one moment at a time. I don’t do this perfectly, but yoga has helped me keep coming back to myself.
A Space for Everyone
It means a lot to me to offer that space to others. Recovery can feel lonely, especially when you think everyone else has it figured out. In class, no one has to arrive calm, flexible, or certain. You can come in anxious, tired, hopeful, grieving, or unsure. You can move, take a different shape, or rest. It’s your practice.
My hope is that people leave feeling a little more connected to themselves and a little less alone. Yoga for Recovery offers us time to listen, to breathe, and to remember that we don’t have to escape every hard moment. It creates space for us to learn how to trust ourselves, make honest decisions about what we need, and move forward in ways that support where we are at and guide us in the direction of where we want to be.
Yoga for Recovery meets on the first Friday of every month, 6–7 PM at Mending Minds — 88 E Fiddlers Canyon Rd, Suite 110, Cedar City, UT.
